NID/CEED Entrance Queries

I faced a lot of confusion and unnecessary tension while preparing to get into a Design college. A lot of people offer rubbish guidance with full confidence. Now, when I m into NID, my dream destination, I would be glad to help the aspirants in their pursuit.

So, If you have any queries regarding anything, you are welcome to share with me. I would offer my best to help you out !

First of all, how do u know that it was your Interview which went wrong. In IIT G, final score is calculated taking into consideration your -
    1. CEED SCORE
    2. STUDIO TEST
    3.INTERVIEW

    A portfolio always helps !

U haven't mentioned ur other details like score, fields interested etc. which would help me guide u more specifically.

Being from a CSE background does not matter.Infact I have seen that Engineers can learn drawing stuff but people with BFA( or similar ) background find it difficult to adapt to technical stuff.

Feel free to discuss with me any doubt :)

    Hi dear,

Fee structure keep on changing every year. So it is not possible to provide you with details on that. However NID has the provision of 100% fee waiver to needy people.

Pursue your passion, money matters will be taken care by NID. You dont have to invest money in petty things like stationary, craft materials etc. during the course... everything is managed by NID.

  8. Hi Supreet,

I'm a 24 year old B.com grad with about 2 yrs. of experience in web designing. I'm planning to apply for DAT @ NID targeting PGDPD in both Graphic Design & Animation. I have a no. of questions -

    1. What subjects and topics should I concentrate on and what study/art materials may I use to be able to put forth my best performance ? Is coaching particularly helpful ? (I have decent drawing skills)

    2. What may be expected at the interview round ? Would a portfolio help better ? Can you advise me on what my portfolio may ideally comprise of ?

    3. Can I avail scholarship and how ? (I don't fall in any reserved categories)

    4. Also, how good are the placements once I finish the course and how well does an NIDian get remunerated ?

Would appreciate all my questions answered.

    Thanks

  10. Hi Supreet,
By the way, first of all hats off to you for such an initiative. This will really help many like me.. Though i know you would have got lot of such compliments but, just yet another in the list
Well, am software engineer by profession now aspiring for NID. I have lot of doubts like:
    1) Drawing & design has just been my passion but, was never part of my educational qualitifation. Now, with help of few in orkut blogs, am preparing by watching youtube videos, different sites & googling on keywords like "divergent thinking" etc.,. Am also trying to change my line of thinking from that typical so called "rational" thinking/stereotype mentality to out of box thinking. But i personally feel there is way to go.. How can i test if am there or not?
    2) Also in such exams there is no such "RIGHT" answer. Every answer is right in its own way, its just that you need to have the thing they are looking for. How can i evaluate my own paper? As soon as i answer a question (during my preparations), what all should i look for if i wear "examiner hat"?
    3) Daily i just take a topic or object & keep drawing about it? But is that the right way? how best can i prepare for the exam in this short span of time?
    4) I dont have gr8 stuffs to show in my portfolio except few paintings of mine (tanjore, banyan leaf etc).. One of a very helpful person told me that my college(engg) project will also help. But how can i make my portfolio appealing?
Huh! lot of questions.. Sorry for that :)
    Thanks in advance
    Arthi

  12. Hi Supreet, Thanks for starting this.. great idea must say!

I am a 2008 graduate in computer science from hansraj college, DU. I want to apply for the new media and digital design pgdpd courses. It would be great if you could please mention the syllabus/guidlines for preparing for DAT. What are the most important areas? Do you have any study/practice material that you can share by uploading it?
Additionally, can you give me a rough idea about the kind of packages offered to NID PG grads in user interface course?

    Thanks for you time!

  13. I am from mechanical engg & i will sit in the ceed 2010 & need 2010.. 14. @chinni :

As i said before, portfolio is a must.

Imagine, there r lots of people coming for the interview. The people who interview do not know each one individually. The time which they spend with each person is typically 30-60 min.In this duration only, the candidate has to "PROVE" that he is fit for one of the 15 seats. Portfolio is the best medium to do so.

Painting and sketching is fine, but if u want to go in Product Design , include some PD stuff also in ur portfolio.

  15. @Mahesh:

Dont ever give up spirits man! Its gud that u r taking pains to understand ur mistakes made this time!

Research assistant-ship would be a gud option, but i think that it wud not help directly! The knowledge which u gain during the assistantship will come handy in due course.

  16. @rajesh...yeshraj:

    SURELY!

We have a lot of B.Com in the PG course...
By the way, U did not mention which stream r u interested in ?

    ReplyDelete
  17. @gopesh:

As a matter of fact, there is no define pattern of paper of NID, specially of PG course.

Neverthless, I will upload some question papers of recent years.
Due to my busy schedule it may be delayed.. but i will try to upload soon.

    Keep checking the link...

i want to know about the opportunities in interface design.

    ReplyDelete
  19. @mani:

    1. Nobody cud recommend you subjects to study for getting into NID. Since you want to get into Graphic Desin/ Animation, your sketching skills and visualization should be very gud.
Try making 50 sketches per day.

Coaching cud help in terms of guidance, but the enormous amount of fees which they charge is not worth the guidance provided.

    2.Porrtfolio is a MUST.

3.Even if u dont fall in any reserved category, NID has a provision of providing scholarships to needy candidates.A proper procedure is followed, comprising of interviews etc. after which u can avail upto 100% scholarship.

    ReplyDelete
  20. @amlan:

    There's a little correction.
    NEED is for undergraduate program.

any official magazine is not available as such...I can not say if any is available in ur locality. The purpose of both the exams is to test ur creativity. Drawing skills are, of course, an advantage but they r not the limiting factors.

CEED has a bit more ratio of technical concepts than NID.

  21. Hi, looks like in huge stack of questions, my query went unnoticed. Please please please guide me, here are my questions (this time in short)
    1) When i answer any design question, how will i know if my answer qualifies as right answer? what all will examiner mainly look for?
    2) In your answer to one of the queries, i read that drawing is not everything that they look for in portfolio. What all then should be included in portfolio to make it appealing. Am looking for user interface design

    ReplyDelete
  22. @arthi :

Hi, Sorry for the delay.. but plz try to understand that I have my course schedule also running alongside :)

    Neways...

    1. You will never know if ur answer qualifies to be the right one.. no body ever will, because design is not binary i.e. either right or wrong. There is always a scope for improvement. Examiners look for your aptitude to interpret the question and your ability to produce the most suitable solution.
Depending on your personal capabilities, your solution could be petty according to you, but excellent according to the examiner, or vice-versa.

    2. Portfolio could contain anything under the sun. It just have to reflect that "U" are devoted to ur selected field. U need not be excellent in your works presented, but the zeal to be a part of the stream( Interface Design, in ur respect) should be reflected.
It may contain your graduation projects, sketches, poems, crafts, games, posters, interaction design projects etc.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hey Supreet, Thanks a lot for your guidance!
Suitable solution in terms of design principles or creative ideas?
BTW, Truly meant that probably you dint get chance to look at my question! :)

  26. Hi Supreet,
Thanks a lot for your effort.I am a NID aspirant.I have few queries for you :)
1.Doing PG in Digital Design from Bangalore and Gandhi Nagar ?? are they same.. what are the pros and cons of it.
    2. Also I would like to know about the salary package(Degital Design,Animation) offered for the PG students in Gandhi nagar and Bangalore campus.

  29. hey supreet ,
hi ...i am student of architecture currently in final yr. .....i am intrested in product design mainly .........but have lots of questions lik .....
    1. what all product design course frm nid includes ...i means ....do that include transportation ,and furniture design also ....cause as they have seprate courses so ...?
2.i heard that industrial design is part of product design ....is it ?or its a seprate branch totaly ?
3.game and toy design pg course in nid ....wat that includes ?....do that includes computer games and all ...and do we need to know computer languages lik c.c++ ....for that course ??

    ReplyDelete
  30. @Priya:

Both the campuses have their advantages and disadvantages.

    1. GandhiNagar is near to Ahmedabad campus, the core NID, just 30 min. far.

    2. Gandhinagar is actually Post Graduate campus.B'lore is Research campus. There is a visible shift in the ideology and methods of teaching.

    3. B'lore has no hostel. Gandhinagar has "awesome" hostel.

4.Industry exposure is greater in B'lore for obvious reasons.

    5. B'lore campus is much smaller than Gandhinagar.

6.Since B'lore is far from Main Ahmedabad campus, there is a bit of problem in arranging faculties, facilities there.

    7. It is newer than G.Nagar.

    8.B'lore is Super expensive.

9.G.Nagar campus is located in a isolated, secluded place.

    10. You can work day in -day out in G.Nagar because Hostel and Studios are situated almost adjacent. Since B'lore campus does not have a hostel, time becomes a restriction.

  31. Hi Supreet,
Thanks a lot for your extensive and very clear reply.
Also I would be very happy to know about the packages offered.

    Thanks,
    Priya.

  32. @chinar :

    For course details check www.nid.edu

Toy and Game design course is offered in Gandhinager campus. It does include computer games but it is not exclusively about them.Focus is on tactile games. If you wish you can concentrate your studies on Computer Games.
Knowledge of any programming language will of course help if your focus is on digital games, but it is not mandatory.

  33. Just to stress upon an important question which many aspirants have already asked...
What is the average salary package and job profile one can expect after passing out from NID with PG Degree in New Media Design or Interaction Design from IDC ? (Am I right in understanding that these 2 above mentioned courses are more or less the same?)
Supreet, it would be so kind of you if you could enlighten us on this aspect.
    Thanks a Lot.

    ReplyDelete
  34. @CD :

New Media Design and Interaction Design are pretty different !

Interaction Design could be compared to Information and Interface Design at B'lore campus.

The effect of recession marred all economic sectors of world. Its effect was also perceivable in the Design arena. The packages dropped down to around 5 lac/annum.

Things are hoped to get better.

My PERSONAL opinion on packages -
Cherish your passion to contribute to the Design sphere. Money is merely a support for life !
If you think of milking out money by entering into Design field, you will limit your capabilities. Please note Design is a PASSION not PROFESSION.

  35. hiii supreet...i am aiming for nid 2010 NEED... i am specifically interested in animation and i have been working with a few studios to gather work ideas ...i do a lot of sketching and painting apart from it i work on story boards and photography as well...i have paased 10+2.but i am totally cluless about exactly what to prepare for the test...could you please guide me ...do i need coaching ????what do you suggest???

    ReplyDelete
  36. @DHIRA:

I will check out with the animation guys and will let u know soon.
As far as there's the question of "coaching"... a big NO ( this is my suggestion ,:) ).

You r doing great by doing a lot of sketching and painting. For animation u need those skills.
Ur preparation looks interesting and i must say u look dedicated.... !
Coaching does not really help !!

    Stay calm & FOCUSED.
    1) Try to do rapid sketching.
    2) Try to look simple daily-use objects from a different perspective... I obviously cannot tell u the exact questions , but they are focused on ur ability to see things which common eye cannot visualize.

That will ensure that u r different and worthy of securing a place in NID.

  39. hi SUPREET,
first f all i would like to say, ur job f helping is simply superb. coming to my query i have completed my B.Tech(Computer Science), now working on Adobe Flash(cs3). Recently i have applied for "NEW MEDIA DESIGN" n my ability towards hand drawing is like a 5th grade student, will it effect my exam? or hw should i prepare for this exam? ppl r making me scared, they say its kinda tough to get through. Plz let me know my first step towards d entrence that i should take..

    ReplyDelete
  40. Hey everybody !

I m sorry for not supplying quick replies as i m engaged in my semester project.

    @raghu setty:

Drawing does matter, but it is not a limiting factor. You are expected to know drawing to such a level as to express your ideas, not to the level to offer competion to M.F. Hussain !
Prepare a good portfolio of whatever your skills are... :)

    ReplyDelete
  41. Hey Supreet,
thank you so much for your reply, as i was eagerly waiting. One more thing i would like to ask is about the quetion paper. I have searched google like anything but nowhere could i find the whole previous question paper. Can you please mail me just one question paper related to "New Media Design". Would be gald enough. And is there any use if i go for some online courses for the entrence?

    ReplyDelete
  42. @Raghu setty :

Friend, truly speaking,I dont think any coaching could make u prepare for NID / CEED. They can just stuff with questions of previous years. In any case, every year the pattern changes. In design u can question anything under the sun. I m not criticising any coaching, but surely doubt their value for money. They charge HEAVY amounts just for giving previous years questions. You can dig they on ur own.

Neways, I m planning to post some preparation material. Will do that soon as I get time.

  43. thanx again Supreet,
